How to Calculate Category Grades
Category grades are averages inside one part of the syllabus, such as quizzes or tests. Calculate the category first, then apply the category weight.

Start inside one category
Do not mix homework, quizzes, tests, and projects before checking whether the course uses category weights.
Calculate each category using the scores that belong in that category.
Use points within the category
If assignments inside the category have different point totals, add points earned and divide by points possible.
If the assignments are equal weight, a simple percentage average may match the gradebook.
category grade = category points earned / category points possible x 100
Apply the category weight later
After you have the category grade, multiply it by the category weight in the course grade calculation.
This keeps a 20% quiz category from accidentally counting the same as a 50% exam category.
Practical example
If quiz scores total 180 earned points out of 200 possible, the quiz category grade is 90%. If quizzes are worth 15% of the course, they contribute 13.5 weighted points.
Planning note
Use category weights from the syllabus or gradebook. Do not invent weights when the course uses total points instead.

FAQ
- Are category grades and course grades the same?
- No. A category grade is one part of the course grade.
- What if my gradebook uses total points?
- Then category weights may not apply. Use total points if that is how the course is graded.
- How do dropped assignments affect a category?
- Apply dropped-score rules only if the syllabus or instructor says which scores are dropped.
