Percentage Grade Calculator

Percentage grade = points earned / points possible x 100.

• 18 out of 20 = 18 / 20 x 100 = 90%, which maps to A on the default scale.
• 45 out of 50 = 45 / 50 x 100 = 90%, which maps to A on the default scale.
• 72 out of 80 = 72 / 80 x 100 = 90%, which maps to A on the default scale.

• Entering points missed instead of points earned.
• Using a points possible value of 0, which cannot produce a valid percentage.
• Mixing a percentage score with raw point inputs.
• Assuming a letter grade is official when your class uses a different scale.

The default letter scale is A at 90%, B at 80%, C at 70%, D at 60%, and F below 60%. Schools, courses, and gradebooks can use different cutoffs, rounding rules, curves, dropped scores, or extra credit.

How do I calculate a percentage grade from points?

Divide points earned by points possible, then multiply by 100. For example, 18 out of 20 is 18 / 20 x 100 = 90%.

Can I use decimal points?

Yes. Decimal scores such as 18.5 out of 20 work when an assignment, quiz, or rubric uses partial credit.

How is the letter grade chosen?

The calculator maps the percentage to the selected grade scale. The default scale starts A at 90, B at 80, C at 70, and D at 60.

Is this the same as the test grade calculator?

It uses the same points-to-percentage math, but this page is focused on direct percentage conversion for any point-based score, not only full tests.

Are point scores uploaded or saved to an account?
